Time-Out is not Time-Off
A principle for the game and for the year
The definition of time-out according to Merriam-Webster is “a brief suspension of activity.” That may be true for others, but not referees. Certainly not during the game, as we’ll discuss in today’s session on timeouts. Nor for officials seeking to develop their craft and career.
“A time-out is not time-off” NBA Finals referee James Williams said to me recently. “When players rest and fans wait, referees continue to Run The Game.”
As NBA VP Head of Replay Kane Williams oft repeats during film sessions, “Whether during play or a dead ball, every movement should be purposeful.” That concept applies beyond the court, like most aspects of officiating. Even a vacation can be done with strong intent: to physically recuperate, to clear the mind, to strengthen relationships. Light may shine onto other focal points, but it’s done with the end goal in mind.
And for those wanting to really continue developing their career, the offseason presents an opportunity to get ahead in core facets of the craft: rules knowledge, mechanics, physical conditioning and mental preparation are all on the table this summer.
Are you up for the challenge?
I’m reminded of these words from The Mamba Himself: "There's a choice that we have to make as people, as individuals. If you want to be great at something there is a choice you have to make. We can all be masters at our craft, but you have to make a choice.”
Our goal is to be your choice. It’s why we have some of the best officials in the world taking time during their busy NBA Playoffs schedule to break down film with you. It’s why we take hours to create innovate content like a deep dive on time-outs. It’s why we post new content and quiz questions everyday on the RefMasters app.
We might be into time-outs, but we’re not taking time-off either.
